Received and Highly Recommended: Tales of Mountain Maryland by Paula M. Strain
January 7th, 2009 by Jesse Glass

Tales of Mountain Maryland; with a Special Section on the C & O Canal.
by Paula M. Strain
Vienna, VA: Potomic Appalachian Trail Club, 2005.

I was pleased and happily surprised by the inclusion of two of my tales from Ghosts & Legends of Carroll County, Maryland, plus other of my material in Paula M. Strain’s book, but what delighted me even more was that my stories and other writings were sourced in the correct manner in the back of the book!

This was far more than what Trish Gallagher in her Ghosts & Haunted Houses of Maryland (1988, Tidewater Publishers) could do. In fact, I use her “borrowings” (pages 37-38; 68-69) from my 1982 original as a classic example of plagiarism in action and show my students exactly what not to do when they write their research papers.

Tales of Mountain Maryland covers a wide range of lore, legend, and history. But even more than that, it is a great addition to Marylandia, because it is properly sourced. Thank you, Paula!
